Bitcoin Surges 8% Toward $70K as Breakout Rally Gains Momentum

Bitcoin has made a sharp comeback. BTC climbed from around $64,000 to nearly $69,500. The move puts Bitcoin close to the key $70,000 level. Several factors are supporting the rally. The larger U.S. Treasury buyback plan has improved market sentiment. A wave of short liquidations has also added strong buying pressure.

Why is BTC pumping?

Bitcoin’s rally is being driven by several factors, led by a short squeeze that liquidated more than $1 billion in Bitcoin short positions. U.S. Treasury's plan to increase buybacks from $2 billion to $4 billion also improved risk appetite. Positive U.S. crypto policy developments are supporting sentiment, while ETH, SOL, and XRP are also gaining. The Altcoin Season Index remains around 40/100, showing Bitcoin is still leading the market.

The announcement helped ease pressure in the bond market. Long-term Treasury yields moved lower after the news. This also improved sentiment across risk assets. Bitcoin benefited as investors became more willing to move back into higher-risk markets.

Short Squeeze Adds Fuel to Bitcoin's Rally

As Bitcoin moved above key resistance levels, traders betting on a price decline began facing losses. Their positions were automatically liquidated as BTC continued higher. More than $1 billion in crypto short positions were liquidated within about an hour, according to market reports.

These forced liquidations created additional buying pressure. That helped Bitcoin move even faster toward $70,000. Some reports put total bearish crypto liquidations over the day at $2.74 billion.

Bitcoin had spent weeks trading around the $61.5K–$65K range. The move above $65,000 changed the market's tone. Breakout traders began entering as BTC moved through resistance.

Bitcoin then pushed above $68,000 before approaching $70,000. The move marked its highest level since early June. For investors, this is important because a sustained breakout can attract more buying. However, a sharp move, driven in part by liquidations, can also reverse quickly.

Ethereum and Altcoins Join Bitcoin’s Rally

Bitcoin’s strong move is lifting other major cryptocurrencies as well. Ethereum has moved above $2,000, while Solana, XRP, and other large-cap tokens are also posting gains.

This suggests that the positive sentiment is spreading beyond Bitcoin. Investors who see strength in BTC may also become more willing to take positions in other cryptocurrencies. However, Bitcoin is still attracting the most attention and remains the main driver of the current rally.

The Altcoin Season Index is around 40/100. This means Bitcoin is still outperforming most altcoins. A reading at this level does not point to a full altcoin season yet.

For now, the market looks more like a Bitcoin-led rally with altcoins starting to follow. A sustained Bitcoin move could bring more money into altcoins. A reversal in BTC, however, could quickly put pressure on them as well.

$70K Becomes Bitcoin’s Next Key Test

Bitcoin is now approaching the $70,000 level. This has become an important test for the current rally. A sustained move above $70,000 could attract more buyers. It could also improve confidence across the wider crypto market.

A rejection near $70,000 could lead to profit-taking. That may create a short-term pullback, especially after such a rapid rise. The next stage will show whether Bitcoin can hold its gains after the short squeeze fades. The Treasury announcement helped improve market sentiment, while forced liquidations accelerated the rally.

For investors, holding above $70,000 could reinforce bullish sentiment. A sharp rejection could bring renewed volatility and pressure across the market. Bitcoin’s next few sessions could therefore influence the direction of Ethereum, XRP, Solana, and other major cryptocurrencies.
