FBI Reports $7.2B in Crypto Fraud as US Crackdown Expands

A crypto trading platform shows an investor $20,000 in profits. The investor tries to withdraw the money, but the platform demands extra fees and blocks access. The profits were fake, but the loss is real. This is a common pattern in cryptocurrency investment scams.

The FBI reported $7.228 billion in crypto investment fraud losses in 2025. The figures highlight the scale of scams targeting Americans. On October 21, 2026, President Donald Trump addressed the growing threat of online scams. He highlighted his administration’s efforts to target overseas scam networks.

The FBI’s 2025 Internet Crime Report recorded 61,559 cryptocurrency investment fraud complaints. Complaints rose 48% from 2024, while reported losses increased 25%.

Across all cryptocurrency-related complaints, reported losses reached $11.366 billion from 181,565 complaints. This wider figure includes other types of crypto-related crime, not just investment fraud.

US Authorities Intensify Crackdown on Overseas Scam Networks

At a White House event, Trump said authorities had warned more than 10,000 Americans about scams. He also cited at least $1.6 billion in potential losses prevented during 2026. FBI Director Kash Patel said authorities had disrupted 20 scam operations worldwide. The effort targets criminal networks operating across borders.

The Justice Department has also targeted criminal networks. In September 2026, the Justice Department reported action against scam-related money laundering. Its Scam Center Strike Force had placed legal restrictions on about $938 million in cryptocurrency linked to these crimes. The action included a crackdown on Xinbi Guarantee, an online marketplace accused of serving scam operators. The department also reported work with local authorities to take down 13 scam compounds in Madagascar.

The $938 million figure is the total restrained by the Strike Force at that time. It is not the amount returned to victims.

What the Crackdown Means for the US Crypto Market

The FBI’s figures show the scale of financial losses from crypto investment fraud. They do not show a direct effect on Bitcoin prices. For crypto businesses, the findings highlight the need for strong fraud checks and clear customer warnings. Investors also need reliable information before sending money to a trading platform.

Three Signs Investors Should Watch:

-Early warnings: The FBI’s Operation Level Up has notified more than 8,000 crypto investment fraud victims. The program reported over $500 million in savings since its launch in January 2024.
-Recovery scams: The FBI recorded 10,516 recovery-scam complaints involving $1.4 billion in reported losses in 2025. Some fraudsters contact victims again and demand upfront payments to recover stolen funds. The reported losses also include money lost in earlier scams.
-Actual fund recovery: Seized or restrained cryptocurrency does not mean victims have been repaid. Enforcement updates should state how much money authorities return to victims.

Investors should check a platform before sending money. Verify its claimed registration with the relevant regulator. Research the company through reliable sources. Avoid platforms that promise guaranteed profits or pressure users to invest quickly. Never pay an unknown person extra fees to release supposed trading profits.
